Course Description

This course explains how to relate classroom assessments in all grades and subjects to content standards. It provides examples of grading systems that show students' academic progress, and how to use them to encourage students to learn more. The course looks at report cards and the future of Standards-Based or Topic-Based Schooling. Educators will develop a written application essay or lesson/unit plan and a research review. They may develop lessons, or activities for classroom applications that utilize the assessment or concepts described in the book.

Course Objectives

  1. Educators will be presented with the rational for changing traditional classroom grading for the new era in standards education and improving student assessments.
  2. Participants will review the role of standards how to design new classroom assessments for alignment with state standards.
  3. Educators will be given examples of alternative scoring systems and techniques to compute grades that reflect standards-based and topic-based schooling.
  4. Participants will be encouraged to utilize the book information to revising grading techniques and practices and also begin the transition of grade transformation in their classrooms.
  5. Educators will be able to develop assessments that encourage learning and begin looking at report cards of the future for Standards-Based or Topic-Based Schooling.

Course Description

This course will examine portfolio organization and development in greater detail with specific strategies and applications. Identifying learning expectations and portfolio criteria will assist teachers in goals setting and classroom instruction. Organizing portfolios for evaluation and grading will help educators to incorporate standards and learning assessments. This course will help educators assemble their own portfolio and teach portfolio development for K-12 students for school applications.

Course Objectives

  1. Educators will determine the basics of student portfolios and select categories for entry into their portfolios to demonstrate student progress and accomplishments.
  2. Teachers will read about identifying learning expectations and criteria to utilize in developing materials, projects and activities for portfolio inclusion.
  3. Students will examine some of the learning samples included in the book and reflect on the validity and significance of various portfolio entries.
  4. Educators will read about how to get students started with portfolios and how they help educators in evaluation, assessment and parental relations.
  5. Teachers will learn about developing portfolios for their professional development and demonstrate their knowledge and ability to teach K-12 students about portfolios.
