Course Description

This course uses the research-based strategies from the bestselling book Classroom Instruction that Works and applies them to English language learners to help teachers improve the language levels of these students. This book examines stages of language acquisition and non-linguistic representations. It presents data that explains the teaching strategies that can raise student achievement and English literacy skills. (2 credits)

Course Objectives

  1. Educators will understand and be able to utilize the teaching methods discussed in Classroom Instruction that Works, and learn how to apply those strategies to English language learners in the classroom.
  2. Participants will learn about the various stages of language acquisition and how to incorporate them into their teaching objectives, instructional lessons and assessments.
  3. Teachers will learn about non-linguistic representations, their role in language development and how to utilize them in their lessons and instructional techniques.
  4. Participants will learn how to incorporate instructional cues, student questions and advanced organizations to improve teaching techniques and organizational strategies for lesson plans.
  5. Teachers will understand how to teach summarizing, note taking and homework skills. They will learn to practice positive reinforcement as well as how to generate and test a hypothesis for improving lesson development and classroom instruction.
