Contact Hours

Independent study teacher professional development courses require 30 contact hours of time that include reading the course book and writing chapter reviews/reflections for each chapter in the book. Later in the course, students will pull the coursework together and write a classroom application essay or they can develp a classroom activity, unit or lesson plan, a project or activity that utilizies course concepts as applied to teaching and school environments.

Course Objectives

1. Educators will explore the topic of resiliency in students and how or why some students
are able keep moving through adversity and persevere regardless of difficult personal
circumstances.

2. Teachers will examine how to build trust in students who have difficulty with personal
trust issues. They will develop ways to identify and use the student strengths, gifts and
talents of each student.

3. Educators will be presented with ways of instilling purpose in young people as well
as self- empowerment regarding students with low self worth so they will behave in a
positive manner.

4. Teachers will have the skills and knowledge to utilize the book information to improve
their understanding and relationships with students to assist them with personal and
educational success

Write several paragraphs summarizing the main ideas, knowledge and information that you thought was significant from each chapter in the book. Extended bullet points of main issues are also acceptable. See the corresponding rubric for guidelines

Writing Assignments

Read the book, Resilience Revolution: Discovering Strengths in Challenging Kids. by
Larry Brendtro. Write chapter Reviews/Reflections for each of the chapters in the book.
Then develop a Lesson/Unit plan or a Project/Activity using concepts in the book. Or you
can write a two-page Final Application Essay linking key concepts from the book. Focus
your writings and activities on the information and strategies from the book and related
assignments. Show how you can apply them to your school environment, teaching
